For our post & beam barns, cabins, and barn homes, we offer specialized insulation packages. We have options for every purpose and climate, from light barn insulation to full code-compliant insulation. No matter which package you choose, you won’t sacrifice the depth of the timbers—our panels are installed on the exterior of the timber frame.
PRE-CUT SIP PANELS
We use SIPs—Structural Insulated Panels—as insulation for our timber frame barns, cabins, and barn homes, with two main packages. The Code Compliant Package meets code requirements for insulation of a living space, keeping the structure regulated through all seasons. The Barn Package is great for clients when the structure is not permanently occupied, but still desire insulation to regulate temperatures.
R-VALUES & SIP INSULATION
SIPs provide continuous, whole-surface insulation and are one of the most effective ways to insulate a building envelope. Unlike traditional stick-framed walls, SIP construction eliminates thermal breaks caused by studs and cavities. Because of this continuous insulation performance, SIP assemblies do not directly correspond to the prescriptive R-values listed in the energy code. In practice, a lower nominal SIP R-value will meet or exceed the thermal performance of a higher-rated conventional framed wall system.
Insulating a Post & Beam Carriage Barn with SIP Panels
Join host Everett Skinner IV, P.E. of The Barn Yard as he discusses the benefits of insulating a post & beam barn with SIP Panels and goes through the installation process on site with The Barn Yard crew. Of the many ways to insulate a timber frame structure (such The Barn Yard's post & beam barns) SIP panels are the best for a number of reasons. First, they allow the full depth of the posts on the interior of the structure to show. Second, SIPs provide outstanding insulating properties. And finally, because SIPs are manufactured to exact specs to perfectly fit your barn, they are easy to install. Learn all about SIP panels in this educational video from The Barn Yard.
Raising a Timber Frame Barn and Insulating with SIPs
This time lapse from a raising day shows the crew raising the frame, adding siding & roof decking, then installing SIPs. From there, the crew finishes the roof, adds a weather-resistant wrap, frames out the open lean-to, installs windows & doors, and finishes with board & batten siding. From start to finish, in just under one minute.
